So, my question is this - which will be worse, not having feeling in my thumb or having a metal plate put in my arm? I may not have a choice if I can't get an appointment until Wednesday. I'm sure that my nurses are great at what they do, but diagnosing the problem over the phone without actually seeing my arm or doing tests, and relying on me, a person with zero medical expertise, to relay information about my situation to them seems a little off to me. I just want to be seen by someone so I can have an actual, accurate diagnosis of what is wrong so that it can be fixed. Then my arm can heal correctly and I can retain feeling in my left thumb. Is that too much to ask? In the emergency room, the doctors basically told me that if it ever went numb to come back to the ER. So, why isn't my doctor concerned? What am I supposed to do until Tuesday?
For now, I can only hope that elevating it and not moving it will help at least a little, but as always, I remain skeptical. We'll see who's right on Tuesday.
I apologize for hijacking your blog here, but I came across it while I did a search for "numb thumb". I, too, am in a cast, left arm. I broke my radius in November, gulp, yes November and am still having issues. Come to find out I also tore the TFCC ligaments and now my radius is short than the ulnar and therefore my bones don't line up and now rub together so now I've been in a cast for two weeks (mine's purple) and my thumb is always numb. I'm left handed too which makes this whole experience even more frustrating. What did you find out about your thumb? I have not called the Dr. for this yet.

Sorry I took so long for me to reply - it's still hard for me to type. The doctor's exact quote was, "Sorry, I think we've been doing this to you." I was a little upset, but they did give me my third cast then, which is much better and the numbness is almost gone. The cast comes off in 2 weeks (I'm 5 weeks in now) and then I'll get a removable splint. I can't wait to bathe normally again!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your arm. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one going through this right now.
Thanks for the reply. I still haven't contacted the Dr. regarding my thumb numbness, I get mine off two weeks from Thursday. The numbness seems better sometimes and not so much at other times. I'm with you on being able to bathe normally, along with everything else I've had to deal with in being left handed and have that arm casted. Even just folding laundry is a chore, more than normal. Good luck to you too!
